Fare changes due to government Community Connect funding alteration

Published 25/03/2024

Some of our fares will be changing, following the government’s changes to its Community Connect concessions scheme, which come into effect from 1 May. These are nationwide changes, decided by the new government.

In Timaru, MyWay’s $1.50 child fare will remain. However, the Metro school and Metro Temuka-Timaru free fares for children age 5–12, and the MyWay by Metro Young Adult $1.50 concession for 19–24 year olds will cease in Timaru on 30 April. This means children travelling on our Metro school services will need to start paying the 95-cents per ride fare again.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my fare changing?

The new government has changed what it funds through its Community Connect scheme. This affects every public transport authority in New Zealand.

Are these fare changes only happening in Canterbury?

No, these are government changes, so they are happening nation-wide. The changes will have a different impact on each public transport authority, depending on what its local council has agreed to fund.

When do these changes come into effect?

From 1 May 2024.

How do I know what my fare is going to cost now?

In Timaru, there will be changes to both the Metro school and Metro Timaru free fares for children age 5–12, and the MyWay by Metro Young Adult $1.50 concession for 19–24 year olds from 1 May.

You can look at our fares on our MyWay by Metro fares page - these will updated by 1 May
