COVID-19 Service updates

Canterbury is at the Orange traffic light setting.

Canterbury has been at the Orange setting of the COVID-19 Protection Framework (also known as the traffic light system) since 13 April 2022.

When taking public transport, the main things to know are:

  • Those aged 12 or older are required to wear a face mask onboard all Metro services (including school services), and all MyWay by Metro services, unless you have an exemption.
  • Face coverings need to be an actual mask and attached to the head by loops around the ears or head. This means scarves, bandannas, or t-shirts should not be used.
  • No vaccine passes are required to board our vehicles.
  • You will still see some COVID-19 QR codes on Metro buses, however you are not expected to scan these at present.
  • Please, do not use public transport if you have cold, flu or COVID-19 symptoms, are travelling to get a test, are awaiting results, or if you need to self-isolate.
  • Please continue to be kind to our drivers and fellow passengers.

For more information about travelling during the Orange traffic light setting, check the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 website.

Enhanced cleaning regime

We’d like to reassure customers that enhanced cleaning regimes on all Metro and MyWay buses have continued since COVID-19 first entered our shores.

This regime is completed daily and includes sanitising of all touchpoints such as the back of seats, poles and handles.

Fares

Contactless payment is preferred, especially while COVID is in the Canterbury community.  Metrocards make this easy. You can order one online  - be sure to register your card for contactless top ups as well. Metrocards save you at least 25% compared to paying with cash.

A gentle reminder

We’re all in this together, Timaru. Public transport is a great way to get around, so let’s keep it kind.

Drivers and transport operators cannot stop people without face coverings from boarding public transport, as many people do have valid exemptions from wearing one. We ask that people take personal responsibility to cover up for each other, and themselves.

Be kind, keep safe.
Ngā mihi, the team at Timaru Metro and MyWay by Metro .
