COVID-19 Service updates

Published 7/09/2021

Canterbury has moved to the Red traffic light setting.

From 23 January 2022 at 11:59pm, Canterbury moved to the Red setting of the new COVID-19 Protection Framework (also known as the traffic light system). Red doesn't look much different to Orange when using our services. The Timaru Link and Temuka services are running to their regular timetables and MyWay by Metro is operating as usual.

Timaru Link and Temuka service operating without capacity restrictions

All Metro services are operating without capacity restrictions. This means that the no standing rule is no longer applicable.

MyWay by Metro is also operating without capacity restrictions. Face coverings are mandatory, and contact tracing is in place.

School bus services

Dedicated school services have no capacity restrictions.

Students aged 12 years and over will now need to wear a face covering on dedicated school services. From 4 February 2022, this will apply to all Year 4 students or those aged 8 or older. Face coverings must be worn while waiting for, and on board the regular Metro services and dedicated school service. Students are also encouraged to keep a record of their journey – to do this simply scan the QR codes on board.

At Red, the Timaru Link and Temuka services are operating under normal timetables.

MyWay by Metro is also operating, although the MyWay weekend evening service has not resumed just yet.

Face coverings and scanning in

You must scan in, using the QR code nearest your seat. If you are unable to scan the QR code, you can call 03 688 5544 to register your travel.

From 4 February, Year 4 students or those aged 8 or older are required to wear a face mask onboard and while waiting at a stop or station, unless you have an exemption.

Please, do not use public transport if you have cold, flu or COVID-19 symptoms, are travelling to get a test, or awaiting results, or if you need to self-isolate.

Contactless payment is preferred, especially while COVID is in the Canterbury community. Metrocards make this easy. You can order one online - be sure to register your card for contactless top ups as well. Metrocards save you at least 25% compared to paying with cash.

On MyWay by Metro, you have the option of paying using the MyWay app or your Metrocard.

Leaving home? Remember:

  • Your face covering
  • Your Metrocard for contactless payment
  • Your phone for QR code scanning.

Be kind, keep safe.
